For employment law teams

Employment law updates, from first advice to tribunal.

Settlement agreements and tribunal claims are often handled on fixed fees, and both involve long waits on the other side and the tribunal. Matterping keeps claimants and employers informed at every stage, automatically.

Why clients chase

Stressful disputes, slow timetables.

Employees bringing a claim are often out of work and worried about money. Employers want to know what’s happening and what it might cost. Both ring when they haven’t heard anything.

Tribunal timetables can run for months. A short update at each step, saying who you are waiting on, removes most of the "any news?" calls.

Built for fixed-fee work

Settlement agreement advice is commonly a fixed fee, often paid by the employer, and some firms offer fixed fees for tribunal stages. Every chasing call is time the fee doesn’t cover.

Example: unfair dismissal claim

Every stage, explained as it happens.

Set up your stages once, with wording that suits your clients. When a fee earner completes a stage, the client gets a short WhatsApp update saying what has happened and what comes next.

This example is illustrative: you choose your own stages and wording, add any your process needs, and skip any that don't apply.

  1. Early conciliation startedWe have started ACAS early conciliation, which must happen before a claim can be made.
  2. Claim submittedYour claim has been sent to the Employment Tribunal.
  3. Response receivedThe employer has responded to your claim. We will review it with you.
  4. Documents exchangedBoth sides have shared the relevant documents. Next we prepare witness statements.
  5. Witness statements exchangedStatements have been exchanged. Next is preparation for the hearing.
  6. HearingThe hearing has taken place. We will let you know as soon as we have the outcome.

SRA Transparency Rules

You've published the stages. Now tell clients as they happen.

The SRA Transparency Rules require firms to publish price and service information, including the key stages and likely timescales, for advice and representation for employees bringing Employment Tribunal claims for unfair or wrongful dismissal, and for employers defending them. Matterping turns those published stages into live updates for each client.

Questions firms ask

Does it work for settlement agreements?
Yes. A settlement agreement might only have a few stages, such as draft received, advice given, terms negotiated and agreement signed, and each can send a short update.
Can we use it for employer clients?
Yes. Updates go to whichever contact you record for the matter, by WhatsApp or text.
Can we skip stages that don’t apply?
Yes. Matters that settle early can skip straight to the end, and you can add stages for anything your process needs.
Do clients need to download anything?
No. Updates arrive on WhatsApp, or as a normal text message for clients who prefer it or don’t use WhatsApp. There is no app, portal or password.
Who writes the messages?
Your firm. Each stage has a short, plain-English explanation and a "what happens next" line, written once and reused on every matter. Fee earners can adjust the wording for an individual client before an update goes.
